The Lit Slam, San Francisco’s newest poetry startup, is coming to the Mission on Monday, June 18th! Our feature will be Jessica Helen Lopez, recently of the City of Albuquerque Slam Team.
Jessica Helen Lopez is a three-time member of the City of Albuquerque Slam Team and the 2008 National Champion Winning UNM Lobo Slam Team. Her first collection of poetry, Always Messing With Them Boys (West End Press, 2011) made the Southwest Book of the Year reading list and was also awarded the Zia Book Award presented by NM Women Press. She is currently the ABQ City WOW (Women of the World) Poetry Slam Champion and founder of La Palabra: The Word is a Woman, a collective comprised of female writers and artisans She has been the Poet-In-Residence in several New Mexico High Schools and continues her work in the classroom. Mother to a vivacious ten year-old daughter, Lopez’s work has been published in UNM Press’s, A Bigger Boat: The Unlikely Success of the Albuquerque Slam Scene, Chicago Open Mic America Vol I, Feminism Now, Poetic Diversity, The Pedastal, Adobe Walls, Blind Oracle and Destructible Heart Press’s, Albumar Familia. Additionally, she was the co-editor for Earthships: A New Mecca Poetry Collection 2007, a finalist for the NM Book Awards.
